Teacher - Special Education Hawkins Elementary School

Reports To:

Special Education Director, Assistant Special Education Director, and/or Principal of school

Qualifications:

• Hold a valid teacher’s license with Special Education endorsement

• Experience in an inclusion setting preferred.

• Demonstrate English proficiency in oral and written English.

Purpose Statement:

The Teacher, Special Education, is responsible for providing instruction to students with special needs and will maintain required paperwork at federal, State, and local levels.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Instructs students in subject matter, using various teaching methods, such as lecture and demonstration.

• Uses audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentation.

• Prepares to teach course of study, assigns lessons, and corrects homework papers corresponding to the course of study.

• Keeps accurate attendance records.

• Maintains discipline in the classroom and on school grounds.

• Administers tests to evaluate progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of student progress.

• Participates in faculty and department meetings, educational conferences, and appropriate teacher training workshops.

• Encourages students to maintain appropriate standards of classroom behavior.

• Prepares for class and presents evidence of preparation when requested by immediate supervisor.

• Maintains availability to students and parents for education-related meetings outside the instructional day when requested.

• Assists in enforcing school rules, Board policies, and administrative regulations.

• Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at times designated.

• Represents the school to the community in a positive manner.

• Adheres to the Hawkins County Schools’ Employee Code of Conduct.

• Adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.

• Adaptability to accepting responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of an activity.

• Adaptability to dealing with students.

• Adaptability to making generalizations, evaluations, or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria.

• The ability to understand instructions and underlying principles.

• Ability to move the hands easily and manipulate small objects with the fingers.

• To make visual comparisons and discriminations and see slight differences in shapes and shadings of figures.

• Ability to perceive or recognize similarities or differences in colors or shades or other values of the same color.

• Possess strong writing, speaking, and human relations skills.

• Coaching is available for qualified candidates.

• Meet the necessary health and physical qualifications.

• Complete satisfactory background checks as required by the Tennessee State Department of Education and State Law.

• Performs other duties as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor and/or principal or his designee.

Capacity and Ability Requirements:

The usual job demands heavy lifting over 60 lbs., occasionally (over 15% and up to 40 % of the time) within the classroom environment. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows:

• Hearing

• Seeing

• Assist in lifting students who need extra help with their physical needs

Terms of Employment:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
